714. Radical and Moderate Sturm und Drang

10:15 AM–11:30 AM Jan 12, 2020 (US - Pacific)

WSCC - 213

Session Information

Description: This session explores the mutual reception between Sturm und Drang texts and the Enlightenment tradition. Taking as its impetus Jonathan Israel’s provocative distinction between radical and moderate Enlightenments, the discussion focuses on the seeming contradiction between the formal and aesthetic radicality but political and philosophical moderation of the Sturm und Drang movement.
